Tribal Belly Dance 101

Tribal Belly Dance 101 is a free dance workshop! It will introduce you foundational belly dance movement and group improvisational theory. You will learn how to do hip bumps with many variations, drill the movements, and practice belly dancing with a group! If you’ve never taken a belly dance class before, this is a great way to try it out for free! If you have experience belly dancing, this class will be a great opportunity to give tribal a whirl, drill, and mingle with Siouxland’s belly dance community.

This free class will run from 1:30-2:30, and it is part of the Grand Opening at Raindrop Studio at 4014 Morningside Ave, Sioux City, Iowa. The festivities will last from 1:00-5:00 pm on Sunday, November 17, 2013. This will be a time to celebrate with many talented, local artists.

Riverssance Belly Dancing in Sioux City

Riverssance is the place to be to see a lot of belly dancing in one location. There will be many different troupes from all over the Midwest converging at Riverssance. All of the shows are included with the admission price.

At the belly dancing encampment area, there will be five different troupes. The Diamond Dust Dancers are coming from Yankton to dance. The Celestial Sisters are based in Sioux City along with Nassim, but Liquid Hip Therapy is coming from Sioux Falls to dance. These troupes will take turns sharing their art at the dance area on Saturday and Sunday, October 5th and 6th at Riversside Park in Sioux City, Iowa.

Danza Mystique is coming from Des Moines, Iowa to dance too. They will perform at Merlyn's Stage.

Free Tickets for Kids at 2013 Riverssance

It's not too late to get free admission for children in kindergarten through 4th grade for the Renaissance festival in Sioux City. Just download and print the following images for your children to color. They can bring their colored pages to the Kingdom of Riverssance at Riverside park in exchange for free admission. All of the pages were drawn by Klaire Pearson, author and illustrator of Hannah the Henna Helper.

The Renaissance fair is a lot of fun because there are so many shows going on all day both Saturday and Sunday, October 5th and 6th.

The belly dance area will feature 5 difference Middle Eastern dance troupes, there will also be drumming, and henna tattoos! Henna tattoos are a traditional type of temporary tattoos that originates from the Middle East and India. They're often done on the hands, they can last a week or two, and they're very beautiful. All of the dancing demonstrated will be family friendly.

The American Rogues are an awesome Celtic band. They are fantastic musicians and play a variety of instruments, including bagpipes. You'll want to get up and dance during these shows! They are scheduled to play on Saturday at 1:00, 3:00, and 5:00 pm. On Sunday, they are playing at 11:00, 1:00, and 3:00 pm.

There will also be many other types of entertainment at the Kingdom of Riverssance. There will be knights, singers, and magicians! There will also be shopping and a lot of good food to eat. This will be a fun and affordable way to spend the weekend in Siouxland with the entire family.

2013 Riverssance Belly Dance Schedule

Riverssance this year is going to feature a belly dance encampment with various dance troupes. The Kingdom of Riverssance is located at Riverside Park in Sioux City. The Renaissance festival is October 5th and 6th, 2013. Be sure to stop by to catch at least one show since the entertainment is included with your ticket price. Each group will have a different performance using various props, possibly including veils, swords, and canes. There will also be drumming!

Diamond Dust Dancers are from Yankton, Celestial Sisters are from Sioux City, Liquid Hip Therapy is from Sioux Falls, and Nassim is from Sioux City. It’s not very often that so many Middle Eastern dancers converge in Sioux City, so don’t miss this opportunity to watch the shows!

When you watch, feel free to clap along to the music and cheer. The better audience member you are, the better the dancers perform. There will also be opportunities throughout the day to give belly dancing a try too! Even though these shows are free, you are welcome to tip the dancers too.

Free Children's Admission to Riverssance

There is a very easy way for children to get free admission to Riverssance in Sioux City, Iowa! This year, there will be a coloring contest for students in kindergarten through 4th grade. Students who color one of the Riverssance coloring pages and bring it to the festival will earn free admission, which will help their parents save a little bit of money. The Renaissance festival will be October 5-6, 2013 at Riverside Park. Riverssance hosts many great family-friendly shows throughout the day, which are included with gate admission. This would be a fun way to spend a Saturday or Sunday with the family in Siouxland.

Feel free to download and print any of these drawings for K-4th grade students to color and bring to Riverssance in exchange for a free child's ticket. All of these drawings were created by Klaire Pearson, author and illustrator of Hannah the Henna Helper.

There are many performers at Riverssance, including belly dancers.
Celtic music can often be heard in Sioux City at Riverssance.

Sioux City Riverssance

Sioux City's Renaissance festival, Riverssance, is going to be the first weekend in October at Riverside Park. On Saturday, October 5th, the park will be open from 10:00 am - 7:00 pm. Sunday's hours will be from 10:00 am - 5:00 pm. This year is going to be great! There will be a lot of belly dancers performing, knights jousting, and the Rogues will be back for 2013!

Heartland MECDA Fall Workshop and Show

On November 2nd, Hallie Marie from Basharaat is going to teach two workshops for the Heartland MECDA Fall Workshop: Creating Combinations and Tribal Veil. Hallie is a fabulous instructor who describes and demonstrates her content clearly; she also provides valuable feedback. The classes and evening show will be in Wichita, Kansas.

Shimmy for the Cure

Irie Tribal Dance Company is going to Shimmy for the Cure in 2013. This is their 3rd year raising money to help support breast cancer treatment and detection.

The show will be October 5, 2013 in Topeka, Kansas at 7:00 pm. The lineup of belly dancers includes: Irie, Basharaat, Whorlwinds, and JoyfulSquid TribalDance.

Minnesota Belly Dance Championship 2013

The Minnesota Renaissance Festival is going to host the MN Belly Dance Championship again this year! The Silk Road weekend will be August 31, September 1-2, 2013. This weekend is a lot of fun because in addition to the regular attractions, there will be a lot of belly dance performances, live Middle Eastern music, and even free belly dance lessons.

The registration form is due August 15, 2013. Participants will get free admission to the fair.

Sizzlin' Summer Shimmy Show

Asharah, On the Fringe Belly Dance, and many other talented belly dancers from the Midwest are going to perform at the Sizzlin' Summer Shimmy Show. The performance will be Saturday, July 13th at Sokol Auditorium in Omaha, Nebraska. The showcase begins at 8:00 pm, but the doors open at 7:00. Get there early for good seats. Tickets are $15 at the door.

Afterwards, there will be a dance party! Last year's dance party was a blast! Don't miss out on the fun this year.

Sizzlin' Summer Shimmy II

It's not too late the register for the Sizzlin' Summer Shimmy II workshops in Omaha, NE on July 13, 2013. There will be two workshops taught by Asharah: Progressive Raqs and Full on Fusion. Each workshop costs $40, but both only cost $75. The Sizzlin' Show afterwards will be at the Sokol Auditorium at 8:00 pm. The belly dance show is open to the public and costs $15. Many talented belly dancers from around the area will perform, including Asharah.

Homegrown Tribal Harvest will be June 8th, 2013 in Topeka, Kansas. Cyndi Cyreigna from Irie Tribal is American Tribal Style certified, and she'll teach an ATS class. Martha Rosas, who is a certified Gypsy Caravan instructor, will teach Gypsy Caravan combinations.

2013 Sioux Falls Shimmy Mob Highlight Video

This is the video from the 2013 Shimmy Mob in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. Nichole from Liquid Hip Therapy was the team leader, and the choreography was created by Bozenka. Liquid Hip Therapy, Celestial Sisters, and the Diamond Dust Dancers joined together with other belly dancers from South Dakota, Iowa, and Nebraska to help raise money for Children's Inn with the Shimmy Mob flash mob. This video features clips from all of the flash mob performances, which took place at Art Mom's Spring Boutique, Park Ridge Galleria, and downtown.

Shimmy Mob in Sioux Falls

Psst! There's going to be a flash mob in Sioux Falls on Saturday, May 11th! You're not going to want to miss this event! This flash mob is to help raise money for Children's Inn, so if you're in the Siouxland area on the May 11th, you'll want to keep your eyes peeled! 

Belly Dancers from Liquid Hip Therapy, Diamond Dust Dancers, and Celestial Sisters are going to participate in Shimmy Mob! The times aren't exact because it's a bit of a surprise, but be on the lookout between 10:45-11:15 at Art Moms Spring Boutique, 1:15-1:45 at Park Ridge Galleria, and 2:00-2:30 downtown at 12th & Phillips!  

There's also going to be a belly dance party at Dance Ballroom Studio, 57th & Cliff Ave, Sioux Falls. There's a $5 suggested donation, but that includes a free belly dance lesson taught by Fatimah!

World Belly Dance Day Charity Hafla & Bazaar

Celebrate World Belly Dance Day on Saturday, May 11th in Sioux Falls.  This is going to be a great day to spend a Saturday afternoon! There is going to be a free belly dance lesson with Fatimah of the Diamond Dust Dancers at Dance Ballroom & Studio, Oak Ridge Plaza, 1200 E. 57th, Sioux Falls, South Dakota! There will be dancing, shopping, and refreshments. Karnak, from the Celestial Sisters, is also going to do henna tattoos. All proceeds to benefit Children's Inn of Sioux Falls.

Siouxland Shimmy Mob 2013

If you have an inkling to belly dance, check out Shimmy Mob! Nichole from Liquid Hip Therapy in Sioux Fall is the team leader again. The flash mob will be performed in Sioux Falls on International Belly Dance Day, which is May 11, 2013.

The way it works is that you sign up on the Shimmy Mob website, which costs $35. Select Sioux Falls for you Shimmy Mob location. After you register, you will be able to access instructional videos to learn the choreography created by Bozenka, a Belly Dance Super Star! The videos are great because you can learn and practice at your own pace.

Last year’s Shimmy Mob in Sioux Falls was a lot of fun! You should give it a try this year!

LHT's Spring Shimmy

Don’t forget about the belly dance Spring Shimmy Showcase in Sioux Falls on Saturday, March 16th! This show will feature wonderful dancers from the Siouxland area including Liquid Hip Therapy, Fatimah from the Diamond Dust Dancers, Julia from Thunder Shimmy, and the Celestial Sisters. On Thursday, February 28, 2013, there is a free dance concert in Omaha, Nebraska at the Orpheum Theater. The Rite Returns begins at 7:30 pm.

More than 15 dance groups are going to perform, including the Lotus Dancers and On the Fringe Belly Dance. Other dancer troupes include Ballet Nebraska and Nebraska Dance Theater.

2013 Shimmy Mob

 If you live in the Siouxland area  (Sioux City, Le Mars, Yankton, Vermillion, Canton, Brookings, or anywhere else within driving distance) and want to belly dance, sign up for the 2013 Shimmy Mob event in Sioux Falls,South Dakota. Whether you have always wanted to try belly dancing or you are an experienced performer, this will be a fun event. This is also a charitable event for women’s and children’s shelters. The flash mob is going to be on International Belly Dance Day, which is May 11th, 2013.
Nichole from Liquid Hip Therapy is the team leader for the Sioux Falls dance team. Nichole was the team leader in 2012, and she did a great job last year when she organized the rehearsals, helped the dancers learn choreography, secured the location, and she hosted a great hafla that helped raise money for Children’s Inn! She also organized a flashback prom before Shimmy Mob as a fundraiser, and that was a lot of fun too!

It is easy to participate in Shimmy Mob. First, register on the website: The cost is $35 Canadian, and there is a way to get a sponsorship if you cannot afford the fee. After paying, you’ll have access to the videos to learn the choreography at your own pace. The dance was created by Bozenka, from the Belly Dance Super Stars! There are two versions of the choreography so beginner students can dance alongside experienced dancers. The money also will go towards your official 2013 Shimmy Mob t-shirt, which you’ll wear to the event. You will not need to buy a costume or anything special to wear. Leftover money (after administration costs) will be donated towards women’s shelters. Furthermore, team leaders will think of ways to fundraise for their chosen charities.

Beat the Blues

Fatimah from the Diamond Dust Dancers is going to dance and teach two classes at the Sertoma Butterfly House and Marine Cove’s “Beat the Blues” special event on Saturday, January 19, 2013 in Sioux Falls, SD. Her belly dance presentations will be at noon and 1:00 pm in the Reading Room. Her hula presentation will be at 2:00 pm in the classroom.
