The Minnesota State Belly Dance Competition registration is due August 15th, but they usually let dancers sign up the day of the contest. The title sounds foreboding, but it’s pretty informal and low-stress. Anyone from professional dancers to beginners can win! (In 2008, dance teachers from SD won 1st and 2nd place in the 39+ age group. In 2009, beginners won 2nd place in the 16+ and 39+ age groups.) The 2009 contest was judged by the audience. Each dancer had about 20-30 seconds to dance with live drumming, and then the audience cheered for who they wanted to win. Gift certificates to Dahlal were given to 1st and 2nd place.
